Make Your NDIS
Goals Go Further

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a federal government program that aims to provide funding to people with permanent disabilities to improve their quality of life.

The NDIS helps participants develop life goals and grants them choice and control over their funding to access service providers to support them in achieving their goals.

The NDIS is available to any Australian citizen that meets the criteria and is accessible Australia wide.

The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIA generally works with participants through your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) who act as your direct contact with the NDIA.

OUR COMPANY

How do I access the NDIS?

To access the NDIS you first must meet some key criteria:

  • Aged between 7 and 65
  • An Australian citizen and reside in Australia
  • Require support from a person or special equipment due to a permanent and significant disability
  • Require support now to reduce your future needs

If you meet the above criteria you may be eligible to participate in the NDIS. To do so you must first apply by contacting the NDIA directly or via your LAC.

In the greater Cairns region, LAC support is provided by Mission Australia. You can find more information about their LACs here.

More information on how to apply to the NDIS directly can be found here.

Can Further Care help me access the NDIS?

Absolutely!

Further Care can provide assistance and advice with any stage of your NDIS journey, from those who are not sure whether they are eligible or how to apply to those who already have an NDIS plan but feel they may be entitled or eligible for more support, Further Care can help.

Further Care’s Consultancy Team has years of experience working in Disability Services from before the NDIS existed, during the transition and initial rollout phase of the NDIS in Queensland and through the continued evolution of the NDIS in the last few years.

The NDIS is a massive, complex, multi-billion dollar government project that is continuously changing and evolving and so Further Care collaborates with some of Australia’s most respected Disability Services Consultants to ensure that we are informed and up to date as we can be to offer the best service and advice to you.

I have an NDIS plan, what happens Now?

Once you have your NDIS plan and are happy with it then you need to start putting your plan into action. Every NDIS plan is specially designed for the participant and so all NDIS plans are different.

NDIS plans provide funding in three main support areas: Core, Capacity and Capital. These are further divided into Outcome Domains and Support Categories. Depending on which of the support categories you have funding for determines what support products you are able to use.

Actually using the funding you have been provided is the most common problem participants on the NDIS have. Don’t worry if that part is confusing for you too!

There are really two main steps from this point:

  • Finding and obtaining the correct supports you need for your plan
  • Getting help to find and obtain the correct supports you need for your plan

The good news is Further Care can help you with both. For participants that already know what they need Further Care has built up its own team of dedicated Support Workers that can partner with you to help you achieve your NDIS goals.

For participants that may require more help Further Care can help connect you to available supports, coordinate your supports for you or provide you with advice on how to proceed to the next step.

Further Care offers free initial consultations to help you make the most of your NDIS plan.

How Further Care helps you

How can Further Care help me reach my NDIS goals?

For many NDIS participants, their plan provides funding for Support Workers to help them achieve their goals. In many ways trying to find a good support worker is like trying to find a good friend. They need to be someone you can:

  • Trust
  • Depend upon
  • Know they will have your best interests at heart
  • Look out and advocate for you, first & foremost
  • Stick by you

And just like a good friend, sometimes they need to:

  • Make sure you get what you need rather than get what you want
  • Always listen to you, but not necessarily agree

Most importantly, a genuine support worker must always maintain professional boundaries with their client. Support Workers are paid professionals who provide a unique service to their clients and this can only ever be achieved if those boundaries are maintained.

Anyone providing services to NDIS participants is required to adhere to the NDIS Commission’s Code of Conduct. It is important that you are aware of the requirements that are detailed here.

Every participant is different,
every Support worker is different.

Further Care specialises in matching the right support workers to the right NDIS participants. We have built up our team of support workers that we can recommend to NDIS participants throughout the Cairns, Tablelands and Mossman/Port Douglas areas.

We match support workers to suit diverse cultural backgrounds, ages, genders and all sorts of personality types and interests.

Whilst we aim to help everyone, we accept that we may not be the best fit for your circumstances. Our mission statement is ‘Our goal is to help you reach your goal’, if we can’t help you directly, we will still help you find the further care you need.

There are many wonderful service providers in our area that can help and we are more than happy to recommend and help you connect with them.
